About Us

Village Uncommon was established in 2017 and is co-owned by Turkish-American couple Ami and Murat Unal. Their love of all things handmade inspired their dream to source unique, uncommon handmade rugs . Village Uncommon supports rug weaving traditions that originated centuries ago in villages all over Mesopotamia, the Caucasus, and Anatolia by working with master crafts people in Turkey.
Ami, a Mainer and avid knitter has lived in Istanbul, Turkey since 2011. Working with natural fibers herself, she is constantly inspired by wool quality and hand-dying techniques used by weavers and artisans in the rugs she sources.

A native of Izmir, Turkey, Murat's early memories of following his tour guide father around carpet shop tours are the foundation of his love of handwoven textiles. Murat has been known to travel with his rugs for his own personal use and was teased by roommates in Australia for bringing one with him in his suitcase.
Village Uncommon has been seen at the Brimfield Vintage and Antique Market, Boston’s SoWa Open Market, Portland Trading Co. in Portland, Maine’s Old Port and Spring Street Social Society’s Pop-up at Platform in Culver City, CA.
